Goli Goes to Grad School (2nd Year Edition)

Greetings from Goli!

To say that things have been a little intense in Goli-land as of late,
would be the understatement of the moment.
Recently, our close friends and bandmates from other projects lost
their apartment in a fire* and we’ve experienced the loss of dear
family members BUT we’ve also started new exciting jobs teaching at
music schools you have heard of (cough, Berklee) and we’ve started our
last year of graduate studies at the New England Conservatory. (some
of those “we’s” are royal 😉

It has been a roller coaster ride, for sure.

We still have our hands and our hearts and our heads (though they
might be occasionally addled) and we’re greatly looking forward to
celebrating the ups & downs of this crazy world with you one more time
before the semester swallows us whole!

Check it!

In our second edition of Goli Goes to Grad School, we’ve asked Petaluma Vale (of Jaggery) and Sarah Rabdau & Self-Employed Assassins to join us for a musical send-off of back-to-school goodness!

-Petaluma plays at 9pm (Val will join her for some celloing & singing) and her enchanting songs of whimsy and clever takes on fairytales grounded in a post-modern reality will keep you tethered to her harp strings.

-At 10pm, Goli will hit with songs of death and getting laid and maybe we’ll have some surprises up our sleeves, like a new song or the debut of a new instrument. You never can tell what we might do. We don’t even know.

-Sarah Rabdau & Self-Employed Assassins will close out the night with well crafted songs, rocking arrangements, sensitive orchestrations and one of our favorite singers! (and some of our favorite people)

We love this line up so much, we would have it over for tea any day of the week and we’d even spike the beverages with a little whiskey.

The FB Invite:

For those of you interested in our NEC activities, we’ll both be performing the music of Marty Ehrlich on Sept. 13th at Jordan Hall.
http://necmusic.edu/music-marty-ehrlich

We’ll be performing quite a bit over the year at NEC as they are
celebrating the 40th year of the Contemporary Improvisation
Department.
We hope you can check out what we are up to and maybe even join us in
the spring as we host our graduate recitals.

Thank you has taken on a deeper meaning in the past few weeks so…

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support of this
little duo with great ambitions.

Set Time Change for Tonight & NYC on Friday!

Hello All,

Life is full of changes and today we present a very important but simple one.
Tonight’s show at TT the Bear’s will feature new set times as one of the acts will no longer be joining us.
What this means is that instead of seeing Goli at 9:45pm, you will see us at 9pm.
Kate Miller-Heidke will hit at 10pm and Lauren Flaherty will close the night at 11:15pm.
All in all, not too painful a change if you ask us.
Just thought you should know!

Tomorrow evening’s appearance in NYC will occur as planned with a glorious set by Goli starting at 8:30pm and wrapping up around 9:30pm.

We can’t wait to play for you all!

Love,
Goli

her shoes (we’ve had the chance to play with her @Club Passim & The

We’ll be joining the likes of Lauren Flaherty and Sarah Jaffe in

Last Minute Goli Show This Week!

Hello Goli Friends,

Spring Break is over and we must go back to our books and practice rooms… but not without one more last-minute Goli sighting!

Our dear friends, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic have asked us to join them for the their next performance at Johnny D’s.
It will all go down this Wednesday March 28th @ 8pm.

The Birdsongs serve up a music that is “…as meditative as it is physical, as rooted in classical structure and jazz improvisation as it is in rock ‘n roll.” (The Boston Globe) With guitars, keyboards, saxophones and a style that is genre-bending, you will surely get an earful if you join us. Original Birdsong member, Roger Miller, of Mission of Burma fame will be joining the band. We can’t wait!

Here are the details:

++++Wed. March 28th++++
Johnny D’s
17 Holland St. Davis Sq.
Somerville, MA

Goli will open the show and Birdsongs will hit after. Lots and lots of music for your ears!

Hope you can join us this week for an amazing night of music!

With tank tops and winter coats (gotta love New England weather..,)

Hello Fair Goli Friends!

We’re back!

We know we said you wouldn’t see us until the semester was over, but that was because our brains were addled by all that newfangled learning we’ve been doing and we forgot about two of our favorite words ever…

SPRING BREAK!!!!!

We were considering going to Cancun, but the thought of Goli Gone Wild made this duo cringe!

We could’ve hid ourselves away to practice 24/7 until we headed back to the conservatory, but all work and no play makes Goli cuh-razy.

Instead, we’re stepping out for Big Night Out at the Burren this Monday, March 19th!

HERE ARE THE DETAILS:

+++Monday March 19th+++
Big Night Out @ The Burren
Goth vs Stoners Night!
247 Elm St. Davis Sq. Somerville
8:30pm show

Goli @ 9:40pm
18+!!!! No cover (though your $5 donation goes directly to the artists!)

This evening of queer live music and dance (& their hottie straight friends) will feature the music of Yani Batteau, Josh Hardy, Molly Zenobia, The Grooves Moons and Goli. DJ Studebaker Hawke will be spinning between sets and after the bands wind down. This week’s theme is Goths vs. Stoners and the best costumes win prizes!!!!
For the FB invite go to https://www.facebook.com/events/105148912949001/

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

For those of you interested, school is going quite well for both the Vess and the Val this semester. We are busy little bees that have been wrestling with such academic endeavors as composing new music based on the rapping of James Brown and how to kvetch on our respective instruments. Yes, this is a serious degree, we swear.

As always, thanks for the love, support and ears!

Valenhog’s Day at Church!

Hello Fair Friends of Goli-land,

Remember us? The little duo that could, can, and is currently… Marimba+cello+voice+melodica+quirk+charm+Vessela+Valerie=GOLI!!!!

We survived semester #1 of the amazing musical bootcamp that is Contemporary Improvisation @ New England Conservatory and now we are back for round 2. It’s great!

BUT… We miss you and we have missed you something fierce since we last had a chance to music it up for you in Oct. (belated thanks to all who joined us @ The Lizard Lounge.) We’d like to remedy all this missing you by inviting you to a little known, but certainly important holiday celebration of Valenhog’s Day.** Nearly equidistant from Groundhog’s Day and Valentine’s Day, Valenhog’s Day is a unique opportunity to celebrate some happening music and really whatever else floats your boat.

This shindig will be happening on Feb. 9th @ Church in Boston and here are the deets:

+++Thursday February 9th+++
Church
69 Kilmarnock St. Boston
21+ $10 8PM Doors (GOLI @ 9pm)

FB Invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/151125041668716/

This show marks our triumphant yet brief appearance in the “real world” before our lives become an endless whirl of graduate school music studies. This means if you need your Goli fix, now’s the time to get it as we won’t be coming up for breath until May or so…

If you’d like to see what that whirl is like, check out the Orient/Occident Concert that our department is hosting on Feb. 21st at Jordan Hall. (http://necmusic.edu/orientoccident)

As always, your support and ears and hearts are invaluable to this duo that is doing and we sincerely thank you for that and can’t wait to see you on the 9th!

Goli Goes to Grad School and Oct. Shows!

Grad School…

We just finished week number 5 and our brains are so full, we can’t believe there are 9 more weeks of this.

But first, THIS WEEK!!!!!

We are having our big “Goli Goes to Grad School” Send-off this Thursday Oct. 6th. It is at the Lizard Lounge and the line up for the night is stellar. It will feature guitar/cello duo Flightless Buttress and the multi-instumental/multi-vocal trio of The And Company.
For those of you with good memories, we put together this same line-up over the summer at Yes.Oui.Si. All of the bands were so mutually enamored of each other, we couldn’t resisting asking both Flightless Buttress and The And Company to join us for our last show until we get our school legs under us.

Truthfully, we may not be playing out until winter break or so, so please come and have a great time with us! And bring friends, friends are awesome!

If you stick around until Midnight, you can wish Val a Happy Birthday!
